How to Keep Your Life Calm and Peaceful, Even When the Dog Bites and the Bee Stings

You don’t need Julie Andrews to skip around your bedroom singing about her favourite things so that you don’t feel so bad.

As much as that would be a treat.

What you do need is a few simple habits that clear away some of the stress and anxiety that build up in your mind. While also making room for more peace and quiet.

Below you’ll find 3 tricks for leading a calm and peaceful life. They’re simple enough to add to your day-to-day. And easy enough to keep in your week-to-month-to-year.

1. Daily Movement

We all know it’s good for us. Exercise. But for some reason (probably because we know we have to do it) it can feel like a real chore.

Ever put it off and put it off all day long, and then by bedtime thought “I’ll do it tomorrow”? Same. The key is, don’t build it up in your mind as some huge task you have to do, but don’t really wanna.

10 minutes. A few times a week. That’s all you need.

Set a timer, get doing your workout of choice, and once you hear the beeps you can stop. Or who knows, once you get going, you might even want to do more.

You don’t even need to do a “workout” as such. How about a walk? Outside. Treadmill. Around the house. On the spot. Whatever. It all counts. Or perhaps hoover-day can be the workout in and of itself.

The point is, movement really is medicine. It makes your mind feel better, and calmer.

And, like with almost everything, don’t worry about doing it perfectly. Or in a pretty sports bra.

You could try rolling out of bed and doing some Pyjamas Pilates. It’s my fav way to start the day.

2. Drain Your Brain

If something is bothering you, talk about it. Or write about it.

Talk to someone else about any worries or concerns you have. Any feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. Or you can write them down and work through them on a page. Clean them out of your mind to make it less noisy. And busy. And overwhelming.

Get it out of your mind. Or off your chest.

Maybe it’s actually discussing the problem you have with that person, because of that thing they did, that’s still on your mind. Or simply making a concrete list of all the thought spirals you’ve got going on simultaneously, keeping you up at night.

Don’t keep them to yourself and your own brain. You’ve just gotta get them out. It helps.

You could try writing things down with a ye olde pen and paper. You might notice that your mind is more quiet. And your day is more calm. And bedtime is more peaceful.

3. Tidy Space, Tidy Mind

Your stress levels are already up to shoulder-level. You think about that task you need to do as you cast your eyes around the house. The dirty dishes are overflowing onto the worktops around the sink because you *still* haven’t emptied the dishwasher. You can’t face doing the hoovering - that desperately needs doing - because you’d have to manoeuvre around the maidens full of (been-dry-for-days) clothes. Stress-levels have now reached eye-level.

Know the feeling? I can help...

By keeping the space around you clean and tidy, it can untie some of those knots in your stomach, and swat some of those flies buzzing around in your mind.

Whether it be little and often, or one big fat reset day, choose a cleaning routine that suits you. And, here’s the good news, it doesn’t need to be spotless 24/7.

You could try setting a timer for 30 mins, and seeing how much you get done.

So there it is. A trio of tricks to living a more calm and peaceful life. I hope at least one, if not all, will help to make a difference for you.

Remember: it doesn’t have to feel like hard work, and you don’t have to aim for perfection. A little bit goes a long way, and something is always better than nothing.

Feedback from A. Djain, at The Creative Copywriter:

Hey Megan! You've absolutely nailed it! There's a lot to like here. I love the headline and connecting hook around Julie Andrews. The tone is wonderfully conversational and natural, yet still crystal-clear. You break up the copy nicely, and you use playful language and imagery (big fan of the "flies buzzing around in the mind").

In fact, you've pretty much used every technique we teach with great skill!

Superb work. You should be immensely proud (there's a bright copywriting future ahead of you!).
